For over 10,000 years people have been living in and traveling through this valley and the place we know as Banff. Long before it became a national park, Indigenous communities used the area for hunting, gathering, and ceremony — especially around the hot springs, which were considered sacred.
Fast‑forward to 1883, when a couple of Canadian Pacific Railway workers stumbled upon the Cave and Basin hot springs. That discovery kicked off a bit of a land‑claim scramble, so the Canadian government stepped in and protected the area. In 1885, they officially created Rocky Mountains Park, which later became Banff National Park — the first national park in Canada.
From there, Banff grew fast. The railway promoted it as a must‑see destination, building grand hotels and bringing visitors from around the world. Over time, the focus shifted from pure tourism to conservation, wildlife protection, and scientific research. Today, Banff is part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most iconic mountain parks on the planet.
